ANNAPOLIS – St. Martin’s Lutheran School of Annapolis recently completed its first Harvest for the Hungry Food Drive by collecting 4245 canned and boxed goods to be donated to the Anne Arundel County Food Bank and the Light House Shelter of Annapolis. This school-wide event will now become an annual one.
“For the past 20 months, we have been using the word contagious, and of course, it has had a very negative connotation,” said Dave Oravec, Pastor of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. “In the last few weeks, that word has been in my mind for something extremely positive.”

The 2nd grade won the class competition with 1167 canned and boxed goods, outdistancing the combination of the 5th and 6th grades who brought in 915 items. The final standings are as follows:
1. 2nd Grade 1167
2. 5th & 6th Grades 915
3. 3rd & 8th Grades 663
4. 4th Grade 588
5. Kindergarten & 7th Grades 439
6. 1st Grade 240
7. PreK 233
TOTAL: 4245
As Christians, St. Martin’s students, faculty and staff are called to help their community when needed. With a county-wide need for food and for love, the school responded in a profound manner. The students also earned some out-of-uniform days for their efforts.

“Maybe at first the food drive was drive by competition, but at some point, that changed,” Oravec said. “The kids began thinking of their neighbors in need, and it became a labor of love.”
