The computer program at St. Martin's Lutheran School provides all students in grades pre-K through eighth with an opportunity to learn how to use the computer. Students in grades pre-K through 5 attend computer classes once a week. One-half a class is sent to the computer lab at one time. In grades pre-K through second, students use the computers primarily to reinforce classroom skills in math, language arts, science, social studies, art and music. Beginning in kindergarten, all students receive training in word processing. Students are taught basic keyboarding lessons beginning in the third grade and continuing through eighth grade. Databases are introduced in the fourth grade and spreadsheets are begun in the fifth grade. Students become proficient at making spreadsheets and charts by the eighth grade. Students in grades five through eighth also receive instructions on using the Internet. They learn to search for information and use electronic mail. In the seventh and eighth grades, web page design and HTML are introduced. Multimedia presentations begin with the making of Kid Pix Studio slide shows in grades K-2. In addition to Kid Pix, third graders are introduced to HyperStudio to make a class presentation about Japan. The fourth graders make a class video about Maryland using individual multimedia presentations about US states using HyperStudio to accompany their classroom state reports. Middle school students make multimedia presentations to accompany class projects. The seventh graders create presentations about countries in Latin America and the eighth graders make a project to go along with their term paper. |
