Advent and Christmas

The season of Advent is one of anticipation of the arrival of Christ. It begins and continues through The four Sundays before Christmas. Advent is a joyful thoughtful time. It is a time of recognition that we are awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Advent's ( key word is "Come") a beautiful word signaling God's own activity in the past, present, and future. Advent is celebrated in many ways at St. Martin's, through worship, the lighting of candles on the Advent wreath, prayer and through the preparation for Christmas, including: caroling, pageants, prayer vigils, and fellowship throughout the congregation. It is a time of anticipation, appreciation, union, joy, and happiness.

The Season of Epiphany

January is the season of "Epiphany" which means "The Season of Light". It is a joyful time in the year of the church for it celebrates the revelation and recognition of the divine nature and light of Christ.

The Season of Lent

The season of Lent is a time of penitence and reflection. It begins 40 days before the day of Easter with Ash Wednesday and the imposition of ashes. Following Ash Wednesday, on every Wednesday evening until Easter, St. Martin's holds a Lenten evening soup and salad supper followed by a Lenten service. It is a thoughtful time of sharing and warmth.

Holy Week and Easter

Holy Week commemorates the story of Jesus' death and resurrection. It begins with the first Thursday before Easter, Maundy Thursday, which recognizes the day of "the Last Supper". Good Friday follows which commemorates the day of Jesus' crucifixion. Easter Sunday recognizes and celebrates the resurrection of Christ.

At St. Martin's, special services are held in the evenings on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. This is a solemn time, one of sadness in reflection on the suffering of Jesus in his death on the cross. In contrast, Easter is a celebration of great joy. At St. Martin's, Easter is celebrated with a sunrise service (symbolizing new birth in the risen Christ), a congregational Easter Breakfast, and special music and liturgy. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon that occurs on or next after March 21.

Pentecost

The season of Pentecost begins on the seventh Sunday after Easter and celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Christ.
