Companion Synods
Since the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) DE/MD Synod partners with three synods overseas, St. Martin's as an ELCA congregation is a partner as well. St. Martin's has been privileged to host visitors from both Finland and Estonia in Annapolis. St. Martin's has provided financial support for projects in both countries and representatives from St. Martin's have visited the congregations in Nokia and Kihelkonna. In 2003, the synod began a relationship with the Mara Region of Tanzania and one of St. Martin's members visited the area that year. See the Global Missions bulletin board for updates
Retreat
Members of St. Martin's may attend the ELCA Global Mission Event. This is a three-day weekend event with workshops that address concerns in areas of Global Mission Advocacy; Witness and Evangelism; and Justice, Peace, and Creation. It makes a wonderful family vacation as activities are planned for all ages. For more information on this event, contact the church office. Your participation is welcome and encouraged.
Prayer Chain
St. Martin's also offers a prayer chain through the Christian Life Committee. There is always someone available to pray for you or your family. Prayer requests may be made through the church office or the pew cards in the sanctuary. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer, call the Chair of the Christian life Committee.
Prayer Vigils
Prayer Vigils are held twice during the year, in the Seasons of Advent and Lent. These are day long prayer sessions in the sanctuary where members of the congregation come in at scheduled times to pray in half hour increments. St. Martin's Day School students also participate. Prayer requests are received and form the basis for the community prayer. All are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Other Retreats
Different forms of spiritual retreats have been offered over the years, depending on the needs and spirit of the congregation. Look for notices in the Sunday Bulletins and in Tabletalk.

Painting: "St. Martin Dividing His Cloak" By Lee Boynton |
| Print | |
|
The painting depicts the historic 4th century figure of Martin of Tours who as a young Roman soldier saw a shivering beggar on a cold winter day outside the gates of Amiens in southern France. In an act of compassion, Martin drew his sword, divided his own cloak and gave half of it to the beggar. The next night in a dream, Martin saw Christ in heaven wearing half of his cloak. The words Christ spoke were simple: "Martin, still a catechumen ( a beginning student of the faith) has covered me with his cloak." Later, Martin was noted for his amazing compassion for others and his rejection of the usual finery of a bishop's office and attire.
The painting is of our namesake and reminds us of the words of our Lord Jesus: "In as much as you have done it for one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you have done it unto me." Another Martin, Martin Luther, was baptized on November 11, 1483, when his parents named him after St. Martin of Tours. The painting was dedicated on St. Martin's Day on November 11, 2001.
The artist, Lee Boynton, has lived and painted in Annapolis since 1979. he is well known for his three paintings at City Hall, which celebrated 300 years of Annapolis history, and also for his historic depiction of 18th century London Town. He is esteemed for his light-filled scenes of the Chesapeake Bay and the coast of Maine. His work has been selected for many national and international exhibitions. |
