The Flying Quilters at St. Martin's was established in the 1970's to provide mission quilts for Lutheran World Relief which began shipping quilts to refugees at the end of World War II made from old clothes and blankets (www.lwr.org/parish/quilts/asp). In 2006, quilters from all parts of the USA made over 300,000 quilts from recycled sheets, curtains, yards goods - practically anything that can be sewn into 60" by 80" quilts - for delivery to those in need.

During the 2006-2007 quilting "year" - September through May - St. Martin's quilting group made 221 quilts which were delivered to the LWR shipping facility in New Windsor, MD. Since the group has no budget, it depends on the generosity of the congregation to provide gently used sheets, blankets, yard goods, etc. from which the quilts are made. The congregation also donates “pin money” to help the quilters purchase other necessary supplies such as special mission quilt batting (quilt middles).

All are welcome to join the group, no special sewing skills necessary, meeting on alternate Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Fellowship Room A. As you can see by the photos of the quilts in the sanctuary on Quilt Sunday, May 20, 2007, we are not creating art or even craft quilts, we are creating practical, warm coverings for those in need anywhere in the world.
