Lutherans Remember Luther's Baptism

Martin Luther was born and baptized in 1483 in Eisleben, Germany, and he died there in 1546. The congregations of Lutherstadt Eisleben celebrated the 525th anniversary of Martin Luther's Baptism Nov. 11, 2008, with a worldwide "Baptism Festival."

Their Web site registered commitments from congregations around the world to participate in a "Liturgy of Baptism and Baptismal Remembrance" and to baptize new Christians.

ELCA and Education

The ELCA and Education

Martin Luther once asked, "What do we older folks live for if not for the care of the young, to teach and train them?" The importance he placed on education has remained a hallmark of the Lutheran church for centuries, and is truly part of our calling.

This church works in faith with more than 2,000 schools and early childhood education centers, 28 colleges and universities related to the ELCA, eight ELCA seminaries, and numerous lifelong learning opportunities. More

Long before the earthquake, the ELCA had been engaged in ministry and accompaniment with Chinese Christians, making such a reconstruction plan possible. More
